I bought these Brodix -12 heads about 5 years ago when I was thinking of stepping up to an unlimited class in my ’68 Camaro road race car. The senior machinist from our machine shop (High Velocity Engines) went through the heads including all new seats from Brodix, 3-angle valve job, etc. But I ended up selling the Camaro last year so I don’t currently have a need for these heads.
These heads have extensive porting. While I didn’t have them flowed, the Brodix catalog spec sheet (see scanned picture) shows 323/225 cfm intake/exhaust at .500 lift and 338/238 cfm intake/exhaust at .600 lift for fully ported heads. My guess is the heads were ported by Gaerte Engines since the T&D shaft rockers are stamped “Gaerte”.
At the time, Brodix touted these -12 SP B heads as their best all-around sprint car head for the 410 cubic inch class. Keep in mind that due to the huge ports, you really need to run a 400 cid engine or larger for these heads to work.
The T&D shaft rockers and titanium intake valves alone will set you back $2,500 to purchase new today.
-Rocker ratio is 1.65 on the intake and 1.6 on the exhaust
-Intake valves are 2.15” and exhaust valves are 1.6”
-Titanium retainers with 10-degree locks
-Springs are 1.65 diameter, 265-275 pounds on the seat and good for .700 lift
-Valve angle is 15 degrees
-T&D shaft rockers
-Titanium intake valves
-Nominal combustion chamber size is 60cc’s
Keep in mind that the exhaust ports are of the “spread port” design. Standard SBC headers will NOT bolt up to these heads. You will need to get spread port headers or at least get spread port to standard header adapter plates to run your non-spread port headers.
Also, you will need to run lifters with a .180 offset pushrod seat.
All of this is fairly run of the mill stuff today for racing or high-performance street. I just don’t want someone who has a 400 SBC in their ’70 Impala Custom Coupe to think they could bolt on these heads with no other modifications. If you’re looking at these heads, I’m sure you’re savvy enough to know that already.
